Terms of Service

Last updated 28 September 2026

Who we are

“We” means Open-Elevation; “you” means anyone using the service. By using the service, you accept these terms. Contact: [email protected].

The service

Open-Elevation is an elevation API based on NASA/USGS SRTM data, resampled by us. Elevations are approximate, and points without data return 0. The service and its data are provided “as is”, without any warranty of accuracy, completeness or fitness for a particular purpose. Do not rely on them where an error could cause harm.

The open-source code on GitHub is licensed separately, under GPLv2.

Accounts and API keys

You can use the API without a key, within a small monthly allowance per IP address. For more, create an account. Keep your password and API key secret: you are responsible for all use made with them. If your key is exposed, rotate it in the dashboard. You can stop using the service at any time; to delete your account, email us.

Plans and allowances

  • Each plan includes a monthly allowance of coordinates, shown in our pricing. Every coordinate in a valid request counts.
  • Allowances reset on the first day of each calendar month (UTC), separately from your billing date. Unused coordinates do not carry over.
  • Changing plan or rotating your key does not reset the month’s usage.
  • When your allowance is used up, further requests are refused until the next reset or an upgrade.
  • All plans also have throughput limits.

Payments and cancellation

Paid plans are monthly subscriptions, charged in advance in euros through Stripe. We never receive your card number. The prices shown are the total you pay. Subscriptions renew automatically each month until cancelled.

  • Upgrades apply immediately; you pay the prorated difference for the rest of the billing period.
  • Downgrades to a cheaper paid plan apply at the end of the billing period.
  • You can cancel at any time from the dashboard. You keep your plan until the end of the paid period, then return to the Free plan.
  • If a renewal payment fails, you keep your plan while the payment is retried, but cannot change plans. If it keeps failing, your account returns to the Free plan.

Refunds and withdrawal

We do not refund partial billing periods, except under the withdrawal right below or where the law requires.

If you are a consumer in the EU, you can withdraw from a new subscription within 14 days of subscribing by emailing us. By subscribing, you ask us to start the service straight away, so if you withdraw, you pay for the part already provided and we refund the rest.

Availability

We aim to keep the service running, but we do not guarantee uptime, response times or uninterrupted access. We may change, add or remove features and datasets. Support is by email, without a guaranteed response time.

Acceptable use

Do not use the service for anything unlawful, try to get around allowances or limits, or overload, disrupt or try to gain unauthorised access to it. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms or put the service at risk.

Liability

As far as the law allows, we are not liable for indirect losses, such as lost profits, data or business, and our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death, personal injury, intent or gross negligence, or your statutory rights as a consumer, including the legal guarantee of conformity.

Changes

We may update these terms or our prices. We will tell account holders about significant changes by email before they apply, and you can cancel before then.

Law and disputes

These terms are governed by Portuguese law. Consumers keep the protection of the mandatory laws of their country and can bring claims in their local courts. They can also use the electronic complaints book, Livro de Reclamações, or the consumer arbitration centre CNIACC.
